In product management, design, and marketing, understanding users is valuable, but data is what truly validates our decisions. That’s where A/B testing comes in. It’s one of the most powerful way to understand what actually works with the users, not just what we thought might work.
What is A/B Testing?
A/B testing, sometimes also called split testing. It is a method of comparing two versions of a product page, or a feature to determine which one performs better based on the goal or metric.
For A/B testing, we create two versions:
- Version A: This is the original version, the current experience.
- Version B (variation of A): The modified version with a change. For example, a new button color, text, layout, or feature.
Then, we split our audience into groups. Each groups sees one of the versions. By tracking their behavior, we measure which version is driving better results, such as more clicks, sign-ups, purchases or engagement.
For example, Suppose we want to increase purchases from our eCommerce app.
- Version A has a button on the banner that says, “Buy Now”
- Version B’s button says, “Learn More”
After running the test for a week, we find version B has got us 15% more purchases, is converting better.
Hence, version B is clear winner here.
How A/B testing is typically done:
- Define goal: Why you want to test? What’s the success metric you’re trying to improve? (e.g., CTR, conversion rate, retention, etc.)
- Form a hypothesis: Hypotheses are assumptions. Example, “Changing the CTA text will increase conversions because it will resonate more with the users.”
- Pick a variable: Keep it simple. Test only one thing at a time, like CTA text, headline, color or image.
- Create variations: Design version A (original) and version B (variation).
- Split audience into 2 groups: Randomly assign users so that external factors don’t bias the results.
- Run the test for a significant duration: It depends on budget but try to run it for minimum a week. Avoid ending too early. Wait until you have enough data for reliable insights.
- Analyze the test results: Check the numbers, which version performed better and by how much.
- Iterate and implement: Apply the winning version and continue to monitor the results to ensure they are inline with our A/B testing results.
Tools like Mixpanel, Firebase A/B Testing etc are used for A/B testing.
In performance marketing, especially Meta Ads Manager, running A/B test is quite easy. We can very easily test which segment of audience, geographical area or preferences work best for our brand.
A/B Testing for Mobile Apps vs Websites:
The basics of A/B testing is same for both mobile apps and websites but the execution is different due to technical and behavioural factors.

In summary, web A/B testing is faster and easier to iterate, while mobile app A/B testing requires more planning, technical setup, and patience due to version control and app store dependencies.
Important points to keep in mind:
- Always test one change at a time to accurately measure results
- Run tests for enough time and with sizeable audience to get significant results
- Focus on high-impact areas, banner, offers, sign-up flow, pricing onboarding, checkout, etc.
- Validate the tracking setup
- Combine quantitative data (metrics) with qualitative insights (user feedback, session recordings)
A/B testing is about discovering what works best for the users and the business. Every test teaches us something valuable about user behaviour, which leads to smarter product decisions and stronger outcomes.
